Recently, the South by Southwest music, film, and interactive celebration wrapped up after another successful year in Austin. Since it falls during spring break week, it's become my tradition to take a break from my teaching work to work for the event at one of the music sites. It's always an interesting and pleasant change of speed for me, and my students get a real kick out of saying their instructor performing at a club and reveling along with the music lovers and club hoppers. This year was no different.
The SXSW music festival brings over 1400 rings and a lot more than 5000 music industry professionals to Austin, and that number doesnt also take into account these thousands attending the picture and interactive celebrations which run concurrently under the SXSW advertising, and Austin embraces all of them with open arms. In the end, the celebration pumps a substantial $30 million into the local economy, and the crowds increase, annually. At least at this time around of year, Austin truly deserves, and demonstrates its position because The Live Music Capital of the Planet.
Austin features more live music venues per capita than any city in the U.S., and host is played by clubs of all sizes, including a church to companies from all over the world during the four-night music festival. The party officially kicks off on Wednesday night with Austins own version of the Grammys, The Austin Music Awards. Lewis Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, was a big success, and Pete Townshend formerly of The Who, took the point with fellow Brit, Ian McLagan, now a beloved Austin musician.
At my club on 6th Street, we presented bands from New York, Chicago, San Francisco Bay Area, and Amsterdam, and celebrated St. Patricks Morning with Irish Music Night on Saturday. Without exception, the members of the their entourages and bands were excited about playing Austin and obtaining the opportunity to be found by a maker or supporter, or picked up by accurate documentation label. One group member excitedly informed me that after their show, these were contacted to collaborate on a major motion picture soundtrack! At the least all through SXSW, Austin could be the city where dreams can really become a reality.
Up and down the 6th Street entertainment district and beyond, record executives checked their schedules and hurried from club to club, munching sliced barbeque sandwiches and looking at the artists, who ranged from traditional singer/songwriters to outrageously-dressed and spikey-coiffed punks and rock screamers clad inside their expected black garb.
Early one evening, a properly dressed middle-aged couple approached me to ask when they can buy a ticket for the show. You'll want a son or daughter performing, I smiled, since they were definitely not your typical team hopper. Normally, their daughter was playing, and he had been followed by the proud parents to Austin for a mini-vacation and the present all the way from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That day had been beautiful, with the temperature hovering near 80, and we spoke for a what they'd seen, and while about their visit and done during Austin. The couple was joyful inside their praise and stated that next year they'd be back for a longer holiday and would certainly be taking friends.
A girl from the UNITED KINGDOM dropped in to thank me for suggesting Marias Taco Express, certainly one of the best haunts, and asked me to an personal celebration in a hotel penthouse nearby, later that evening. Since this golden carriage that is SXSW has to reverse into a pumpkin by Monday morning, I thanked her, but had to decline, and I'd some lesson plans to write. The Staging Guy 7310 Manchaca Rd Austin, TX 78715 (512) 537-4489 patent pending
