A Brief History of Military Watches

Military watches, as their name indicates, were developed for use in the armed forces. The first military watches were naval pieces, chronometers that worked well because of their functions, but as major technological advances were made by other branches of the military - aviation in particular - across the time of the Second World War, exact moments became essential. (Also called "Pilot") watches were born as the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention," and Navigator.

In Navigator view design, the pilot was allowed by the seconds bezel to match the seconds hand with proper research time before takeoff, and to make manual modifications to radio time signals whilst in flight, ergo eliminating any "chronometer error" and the navigational errors that can result.

Great War, Great Technical Developments

Moments always been of the fact in both military technology and military watches. "Center-seconds" hands, (also known as a seconds feature") - the element that allowed for synchronization between two timepieces - continued to enhance and progress.

The definitive Navigator "hack" watches feature a black dial and white Arabic numerals and indices, time, minute, and center-seconds arms. Sizing is all over the board; traditionally, such significant companies as Elgin, Waltham, and Bulova Watches constructed watches (for the renamed Army Air Force in 1941), no more than 31mm in length. The German army tended toward greater faces, often in the 55mm range. These watches were worn on the exterior of a jacket or on the navigator's thigh. Antimagnetic protection was also added by the Germans for their chronometers.

Within still another important Axis energy, Seiko produced a staggering quantity of military watches for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. These watches averaged around 49mm in diameter.

Moving The Cold War

The drained peace of the "Cold War" turned reality and while the days of WWII passed into memory, military technology and military budgets boomed. In the age of nuclear weapons the airplane ascended to its strongest military and political position ever. Watchmakers increased to the call by creating a musical instrument worth entering struggle with humankind's most effective weapon. These were the Glory Days of the military view, although nobody style home can claim full credit for the advances produced in the throughout that time.

Cold War-era military watches were much larger in proportions compared to typical American navigators before them. Averaging 36mm in size, the crafting of the timepieces was moved to Switzerland and Swiss military watch businesses with generations' old reputations for accuracy. Like those before them, these Navigators also included a flat black dial marked with white Arabic numerals 1-12, and with white indices. The brand new models did not have white numerals at primary three, 6, 9, and 12. Yet another fresh addition was a shatterproof Perspex fat crystal, which protected its big 12 ligne action from magnetic fields. These hand-wound watches were anticipated to be water-resistant to 20 feet, including water-resistance under low-pressure at operational altitudes.
