Believe it or not, the colors red, white, and blue didnt have any importance if the flag was adopted in 1777. The Continental Congress actually passed a resolution on July 4, 1776 which authorized a committee in the future up with a seal for the United States of America. That committee was instructed to make a design that resembled the Founding Fathers' beliefs of values and freedom for the new Nation. It wasnt before seal was finished and approved on June 20, 1782 that the designs and national colors on the American flag had any defined meaning. The real reason for the banners design, extracted from a book compiled by the House of Representatives through that time, is as follows:

  • The Stripes White to signify purity and innocence Red to symbolize hardiness and valor
  • The Field Blue for perseverance, vigilance and justice
  • The Star - emblematic of the divine goal and the heavens to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light coming from the sun."

In 1777, how many lines was congressionally required to stand at thirteen to represent the initial thirteen colonies, however, patterns throughout America still varied greatly. A hero of the War of 1812 and Naval Officer called Samuel Chester Reid got together with Ny Congressman Peter H. Wendover in 1818 and caused a bill to ascertain uniformity for the design of the American flag. Samuel Reid was the person who really suggested as new states were admitted to the Union that stars be added. That bill was handed down April 4, 1818.

Over the years, there were twenty-seven versions of the flag. The current style dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the Usa of Americas 50th state.
